South Whittier

Whittier was established in the 1800s by a Quaker family, Jon and Rebecca Bailey. Those interested in the local history can visit the original Bailey House and the Whittier Museum, both operated by the Whittier Historical Society and the City of Whittier. The museum’s mission is to preserve and illustrate the region’s history through photographs, documents, art and artifacts.

Popular local activities generally involve outdoor recreation at one of several park sites. Greater Los Angeles County and neighboring Orange County also offer a wide range of big name entertainment and activities, from performing arts to professional sports to amusement parks. Los Angeles and Orange County both have a wealth of art museums, theaters and groups, with performances that can fit almost any budget. Local sports teams include two Major League Baseball teams (Dodgers and Angels), two NBA teams (Lakers and Clippers) plus minor league hockey, basketball and baseball teams. Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm and Medieval Times are also located approximately 15 miles southeast of South Whittier. For those who love to shop, the greater Los Angeles/Orange County region offers Rodeo Drive, South Coast Plaza and quaint, artsy shopping districts like Laguna Beach.

South Whittier residents enjoy the climate that has made Southern California a popular, year-round travel destination. Temperatures range from summer highs of about 90 degrees to winter lows in the low 50s. Annual precipitation is light on average, at about 15 inches. Rainfall is concentrated in the winter and spring months, while summers are sunny, warm and dry.
